Operation Rebound

injured soldiers

You can’t really tell by looking at this picture, but these are former soldiers each wounded in Iraq. From left: Rich Ingram, Andy Hatcher and Melissa Stockwell. They were a relay team in the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon.

Melissa lost her leg to a bomb, but finished ahead of plenty of swimmers who had both arms and legs, in the swim from Alcatraz.

Andy lost his foot to an IED and raced for 8 miles in the triathlon.

Rich’s arm was blown off and he has a prosthetic arm just for cycling. He cycled for 8 miles.

“We’re really lucky to have what we have, and that’s what you got to focus on. You got to stay on the optimistic side. You can’t start focusing on the dramatic negative aspects of it.”

Andy Hatcher, Operation Rebound

We really need to hear more about people like this and much less of Paris, Rosie and so many others!

Happiness and Caring?

nude idiots

MEXICO CITY — More than 18,000 people stripped down and bared it all in Mexico City’s vast main square Sunday for U.S. photographer Spencer Tunick’s biggest nude shoot yet.

Standing up to salute, crouching in fetal positions and lying prone on the tiles of the Zocalo plaza, the volunteers formed a sea of flesh that Tunick snapped from balconies and a small crane in the morning light.

“What a moment for the Mexican art scene!” Tunick said in a news conference. “I think all eyes are looking south from the United Sates to Mexico City to see how a country can be free and treat the naked body as art. Not as pornography or as a crime, but with happiness and caring.”

Happiness and caring is exactly what I think of when I see a huge group of naked people in a plaza! Heh. Exactly! Dummies never crossed my mind! Really! Not one time! (I may have a hard time getting my fingers uncrossed!) And I bet happiness and caring is what the people posing were thinking as they looked around. No peeking at your neighbor! Eyes front! Er…eyes down. Yea, eyes down!

I do not get this. At all!

Well, at least they’re finding work in their own country! As Martha says, it’s a good thing!

Happy Birthday!

Poor Fred

The “wild” pig that was shot by the 11 yr old really does exist and got that big from a pampered diet from the original owners. His name was Fred and he was a Christmas present as a piglet to the man’s wife a couple of years ago. He was gentle enough that they let their grandkids play with him.

They decided to sell their pigs and Fred went to the hunting resort, supposedly to breed with other pigs and “probably hunted”. He was hunted within a low-fenced area and shot about 6 times. The father of the 11 yr old said he believed the pig was feral at the time of the hunt.

How sad for Fred!

I wouldn’t email death threats to the kid like some people have. The owner most likely got a steep price for Fred because of his size and I doubt he’s losing any sleep over it!

Poor Fred—all he wanted to do was eat and procreate, and now he’s sausage and a head on the wall!
